The Hanging Church
The Hanging Church, also known as the Church of St. Virgin Mary, is a historic Coptic Orthodox site located in Old Cairo. As one of Egypt’s oldest and most significant churches, its roots trace back to the late third century and early fourth century AD. This makes it not only one of the earliest Christian establishments in Egypt but also a vital symbol of Coptic Christianity. The church’s name, “The Hanging Church,” originates from its unique position above the Roman fortress gate of Babylon, giving the impression that its nave is suspended in mid-air. Renowned for its architectural and religious heritage, the Hanging Church continues to attract visitors and pilgrims, offering a deep connection to Egypt’s rich Christian history.
The Egyptian Museum
The Egyptian Museum in Cairo is an iconic and easily recognizable landmark for anyone touring the city. Established in 1902, the museum was purpose-built to house the extensive collection of antiquities from ancient Egypt. It has since become one of the most renowned museums in the world, boasting a vast and invaluable collection of artifacts that showcase Egypt’s rich history and heritage. The Egyptian Museum is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in exploring the treasures of ancient Egypt, and it offers a remarkable journey through the country’s ancient past.
Ben Ezra Synagogue
The Synagogue of Ben Ezra, located behind the Hanging Church in Old Cairo, holds historical and religious significance in the context of the biblical story of Baby Moses. According to tradition, it is believed that the site of the synagogue was where the box containing Baby Moses was found. This story is rooted in the biblical account of the infant Moses being placed in a basket and set afloat on the Nile River by his mother to escape the decree of Pharaoh. The Synagogue of Ben Ezra is a key site in the history of Jewish heritage in Egypt and a place of historical and religious importance.
